Starting Line
Big congrats to our guy DBo for a stellar race in an absolutely biblical storm last weekend at the Mozart 100. He’s currently in Austria drying out, but will be back to join Aaron next week on the podcast for a proper catch up. There will be lots to unpack from the past few episodes, but until then, enjoy this week’s episode with Ryan Thrower. He recounts his experience of picking up a camera and how volunteering to take photos at a race began to open doors for him and his career in the outdoor industry as one of the founding members of Freetrail.
Building An Outdoor Media Empire
If you've listened to or watched any trail running content in the past few years, there's roughly a one in three chance that Ryan Thrower had something to do with it. In this episode of Second Nature, we talk about how he got into the outdoor industry as a founding member of the Freetrail media empire, and how developing a durable skill like photography and videography helped open some big doors along the way.
Show Notes
We talked quite a bit about Freetrail’s content output, which Ryan has been instrumental in developing. Here are the two videos that we referenced on the podcast, which are also the two most viewed videos on their YouTube channel.
Brand, Product, Content
Ryan’s BPC: Jomboy Media’s Talkin’ Baseball. Ryan draws inspiration from baseball media, and this is his favorite channel to watch.
Aaron’s BPC: Casey Neistat’s video “Make It Count” was a viral sensation a decade ago, where he took his budget from Nike and instead traveled around the world for 10 days with his friend Max. Digital Spaghetti recently did a full breakdown with Max Joseph, who edited the film. During the interview, he dropped some serious knowledge - including the tiny detail that they did the entire video for Nike, but forgot to actually bring the Nike Fuel Band along on the trip. Whoops.
Make It Count: Casey Neistat
Digital Spaghetti: Max Joseph
