Trade Secrets in the Outdoor Industry
Trading stories about patents, branding and industry secrets.
Starting Line
This week was a fun one, with quite a range of topics to share. We kicked off the week with Ian Gates breaking down all the important details that go into protecting brands, projects and ideas in the Outdoor space. A fascinating conversation where we all learned so much from an industry expert! Today’s podcast is a fun one, too - Dylan and Aaron start the episode with a riff on the idea of becoming “Strava Jockeys”.
Episode 23 - Trade Secrets, Branding and Patents
Ian Gates and the crew at KRDG Law are specialists in the Outdoor Industry, working with all kinds of brands (including Dylan and Aaron’s brands) to patent, trademark, protect trade secrets, and much more.
Episode 24 - Strava Jockeys
Would you pay someone to boost your Strava stats? We riff on this idea, then dig into the instant buy that was Courtney Dauwalter’s signature shoe from Salomon. The outdoor sports are having a moment in the Olympics, so we run through the highlights before bringing it home with a discussion about the future of Second Nature.

Brand, Product, Content
Here are some of the Brands, Products and Content that we got excited about this week on the podcast:
Knix: Ian Gates brought this up on the pod, they are supported by Megan Rapinoe and they are currently running a campaign called “Sport Your Period” that pays ANY athlete who talks their period in post-game interviews. There’s a huge stigma in sport, which leads 1 in 2 teens to drop out of sports, and this campaign (and product) is aimed to change that.
Decathlon x CrowdStrike: A lightning fast ad that outdoor brand Decathlon dropped immediately after the CrowdStrike situation. This went up in digital billboard advertisements in less than 24 hours, which is unreal response time.
Yeti - Map The Gaps: Yeti exploited an opportunity with some unmapped trails on Google Maps by plugging in their own content, featuring their new Hopper backpack. Check out the site that drove 300% lift to the sales of this pack, and then go check out the newsletter where we learned about it (one of our favorites)!
Thank You
We’re interested in your thoughts about the future of Second Nature and what you’d like to see us do with it. Please respond to this e-mail with your ideas, or hit us up on LinkedIn or Instagram with your thoughts. Thanks again for reading this week’s newsletter and please help us continue to grow by sharing the podcast with someone!
This was a fun one! So interesting to hear the process of protecting your creations and ideas. Can’t wait to learn more about the work you are doing to bring forth a product and now understand why it’s been so low key.
